Founded under the French Protectorate to ensure the pacification of the country’s southern regions, Tataouine has today become a charming and picturesque small city with a bi-weekly market held on Mondays and Thursdays, offering beauty products such as Henne and Khol, as well as basketry items, ancient jewelry and particularly very beautiful weavings.

Famous for the multitude of Ksours dating back to the XVth or XVIth centuries, the most famous of which being Ksar Ouled Soltane, the city is also renown worldwide for its name which inspired the Cinema producer George Lucas (as he turned there some sequences of the movie Star War) to choose a name for the sand planet: Tatooine.
