Monastir, the natal city of former president Habib Bourguiba at the most southern end of the Gulf of Hammamet, constitutes an important summer resort, appreciated by tourists and also an important university pole (fifth its population is made up of students). The city is served by the Habib Bourguiba International Airport, one of the most important ones in the country.
