Before the Roman annexation of Numidia, the city of Thugga, built over a hill overhanging a fertile plain, used to be the capital of a Lybico-punic State. It prospered under the Roman and Byzantine domination but declined throughout the Islamic era.

The ruins that are visible today impressively reflect the resources of a small Roman city on the borders of the Empire.
